POPULAR DAY HIKES 2 -- CANADIAN ROCKIES by Tony Daffern "Lake Agness-Beehives Circuit -- ...Head toward [Chateau Lake Louise], cross the bridge over the outlet creek and follow the lakeside path in front of the Chateau to the far end; Good, well maintained trails that can be icy in winter. The switchbacks to Big Beehive provide a moderately angled route up a steep slope.... The teahouse (open daily June to October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) serves soup, sandwiches, cookies and pastries as well as many varieties of black and herbal teas." "Bow Glacier Falls -- Drive the Icefields Parkway north from the Trans-Canada Hwy. for 36 km to Num-ti-jah Lodge...Well-trodden trail, flat for most of the way though occasionally under water, when an alternate, higher trail is available. The final section is across talus...The trail now climbs steeply up some steps to the rim of the canyon and a junction below which a large limestone boulder bridges the gorge...Keep right and continue climbing to the crest of the terminal moraine and a good view of the falls." "Parker Ridge -- ...halfway along the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper. The trailhead-on the west side of the road-4.2 km south of the Banff-Jasper Park boundary and 5.2 km north of the Bridal Veil Falls lookout at the top of the big bend hill...A fairly easy, well-maintained trail that switchbacks up to a ridge overlooking the Saskatchewan Glacier valley." |
